News from our team

June 2025:

Our lab did so amazing and knocked socks off at ICFUST 2025!

Dr. Norman Kleiman had to talks presenting on Far-UVC light damaging DNA predominately via oxidative stress-related mechanisms and also an update on the work of acute exposure to far-UVC and its ocular effects in humans.

Imke Folkerts presented a talk on her work: Comparison of cellular death mechanisms in human corneal epithelial cells when exposed to 222 nm versus 254 nm UVC.

Imke also had a poster on the impact of 222 nm far-UVC light on preventing aerosol transmission of influenza A in a Syrian hamster model.

Camryn Petersen presented a poster on Susceptibility of Extremophiles to Far-UVC Light for Bioburden Reduction within Spacecraft Assembly Cleanrooms

Raabia Hashmi presented a talk Analysis of Skin Thickness Using Caliper Bi-fold Measurements After Acute UV Exposures in SKH-1 Mice

Matthew Ramey presented a poster on his work Effect of chronic (20 week) exposure to 222 nm far-UVC or 254 nm UVC light on the eyes of SKH-1 mice.

June 2025:

A successful graduation season is upon us with Camryn Petersen earning her MS in Toxicology, Matthew Ramey earning his MPH in Environmental Health Science; both from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

Peter Arden earned his MD from SUNY Downstate school of Medicine and matched to his dream residency in psychiatry at Boston University!

June 2025:

From lab partners to life partners, the Kleiman lab specializes in radiation and... Chemistry! Congrats to Imke and Peter on their engagement (of course all while visiting Marie Curie's lab and the institute of Radium in Paris!)

May 2025:

Congratulations to Matt for getting into medical school and accepting an offer from Oakland University William Beaumont!

May you never have to endure optokinetics testing again.

May 2025:

Honoring Dr. Giacchino Failla, Norman has been recognized for his contribution to his work in radiation research and received the 2025 Failla Memorial Lecture Award from the Radiological and Medical Physics Society of New York. Congrats Norm and great speech!
